Indie Music Give Record Labels a Run For Their Money?
March 20, 2007 by Jo Minor
Do indie labels have enough marketing power, or at least an attraction factor, to give major established labels a run for theirĀ money?
Elliot Van Buskirk writes in Wired.com that they will. Eventually.
A big problem is that marketing an act requires a lot of $$$, and manpower. Most indie labels today tend to focus on playing a managerial role to solve that issue, and outsource production and marketing.
Another issue is DRM or Digital Rights Managemement. Taken from the Wired article:
Said Gordon, “We’re more liberal (than the majors) in embracing new tech, and enjoy better relationships with our customers than the majors do. The majors create stars on huge platforms — they’re almost not real, they’re almost like comic book characters. With indies, these are folks that live around town, and they don’t want to steal from their friends. That’s a level of protection that no DRM can achieve.”
