RIP: CBGB Founder Hilly Kristal
September 20, 2007 by Jo Minor
MTV.com reported that Hilly Kristal, the founder of the famous New York punk rock scene CBGB, died on Tuesday from complications from lung cancer at the age of 75.
Kristal, who helped the punk rock revolution of the mid-70s, was the advocate of bands like The Ramones, Talking Heads, Television, Prong and Blondie, among others. CBGB, which opened in December 1973, was officially called CBGB & OMFUG, which stood for “Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music for Uplifting Gormandizers.”
There were plans to relocate the venue to Las Vegas following a final show in October 2006, but it never materialised.
